The Colonial Period

Why Did the American Colonists Fight the British in the Colonial Period?

After setting off to the new world, and setting up the 13 colonies, the former modern Americans were not too pleased about the habits of the British Empire, and top of their list of reasons for having a spat with the King of England were:

  1. Taxation without representation – no-one likes this – take for example the green card holder who pays US taxes but isn’t allowed to vote in the US.
  2. Boarding – members of the British army were allowed to lodge, board or quarter in the homes of the Americans, which is quite a bother. They bring all their tea and crumpets, and the officers talk politely about cricket while the foot soldiers drink all your beer and fight your friends.
  3. Because they didn’t have self-government – the right and responsibility to make their own mistakes and create their own victories.
